Ten years ago when all this cultural revolution started, many of us dreamed and hoped that something beautiful was coming.
With each passing year, everything was getting better and better, the Bubi culture was once again the protagonist in the heights of Bioko. The flames of the fire of the ancestors recovered the heat in the Wetya.
The sound of the elëbó and the Bölëbó dance drove the public crazy again, the rhythmic steps of the Katyá and Möate received more applause, the artisans recovered their creativity, the artists of all art disciplines were there to say e ripëló wé séte.
The gastronomic diversity, ready to be tasted, and the Bötutú, symbol of the event, ready to sound and travel all over the island.
The people more united than ever, to celebrate the international day of the Bubi mother tongue.
What more could we ask for?
May this decade be a decade that paves the way to strengthen our identity, may the Bubi language once again be spoken and heard in the four corners of the island, may the Bubi culture and its mother tongue never perish, may the thinkers who activated this great event, Ruppé and all the spirituality of the ancestors protect them.

THIS IS WHERE IT ALL BEGAN
First edition of the Bubi Mother Tongue Day in Rebola.

The first celebration of International Mother Language Day, adopted and adapted to the Boobe, was a singular afternoon of which we will always remember. It was one of those afternoons when you say Oh, my God, thank you! It was particularly exciting for me, first of all, to see how the hard work of the young people of the Rebola House of Culture was concluded with great satisfaction. It also filled me with pride to talk with the delegates of the commissions of the participating towns, since Rebola had shone with the arrival of people from all over the island. Gathering so many people with the same feelings for Boobe identity was the greatest thing we were experiencing. It was so moving to hear how people recited, sang and danced in all the dialects of the Boobe language. It was so moving that now, suddenly, I heard a neighbor next door say: "I feel like crying because of what I am enjoying, but I tell you that I can die peacefully because I know that we are facing a new beginning". Today, as these words resonate with me, I am heartbroken that Hermes Poko is truly no longer with us. May his soul find peace in the world of the ancestors, as well as the souls of all those who have gone through this experience. This day marked an important milestone for us to raise awareness of the importance of the Boobe language and culture, and it is the duty of all of us to contribute to promote actions for its revitalization. ~ BORUBEKA

BATETE
Tell us what you felt The day of Ëvóvë-Ëbóbë in Batete?
Batete was the second village to host the international day of the Bubi mother tongue, ËVÓVË /ËBÓBË here on the island of Bioko, after Rebola and it was the first edition in which I participated.
I was surprised by the degree of organization of the few members leading the group. There were several activities; typical dances, talks, questions to each village about what they do to be said speaking bubi in their village, homage was paid to the teacher Paciencia Tobileri Bepé who now rests, the transfer of the elëbö, that Batete gave it to Basupú, who was going to be the one who will take his turn the following year.
It is necessary to praise the good reception and welcome of the host village, Batete.
The towns that participated in this edition with activities were: Baney, Bososo, Baresó, Bocoricho, Basupú, Moka, Bariobé, Rebola and the town of Batete itself.
The activities lasted until three o'clock in the morning and there were no incidents. ~ SÖPPË

BASAKATO SF
I was in Basakato SF.
Tell us about it.
I started to feel the vibes of the event from the moment Basakato SF was chosen to host the event of the fourth edition of the mother tongue, Éböbë 22017. After experiences lived in previous editions, I knew the excitement and expectations that are generated in this event, and even more, when it is held in your town and if you are lucky enough to be part of the organizing committee. Also, I was aware of the challenge of hosting an event of such magnitude that involves many of the villages of the island, I saw it as one of the ways to demonstrate the strong commitment and involvement of Basakato SF with the project of promoting the mother tongue, the Éböbë.
This event was undoubtedly one of the biggest celebrations I have ever witnessed in Basakato Sf; to see the arrival of the delegations of the villages every day in which the activities organized throughout the week were scheduled, to see how many Basakatans are involved in the tasks of support to the internal organization; to see the striking and colorful attire of the badge of "Éböbë 2017- Basakato of the Holy Family", becoming visible in every corner of the village, I would almost say that the aroma of the festival was perceived in every house.
Of the activities I can highlight; the contest held on the mother tongue for the children, I found impressive the degree of knowledge and management of the lexicon of many of them. I was also delighted to see the performances of the typical native dances of the island of Bioko, especially the one in which a young boy dressed in typical traditional clothing came on stage and sang and danced with an amazing genius, carrying all the movements of the song of the Katya's performance to the rhythm.
Of all these activities, as usual in the celebrations of the Éböbë, the presentation of the honoree was the most impressive moment for me, not only because of all the folkloric representation or the enjoyment of the performance that accompanies the honoree in these moments on stage, but also to see the honoree himself, Father Eteo, a religious eminence and a Bubi cultural reference and who is also one of the promoters of the learning of our language.
The exhibition of the cultural objects was not as spectacular as in the following editions of the Éböbë where, if, they are exposed in the Wettya (hut or hut built in a handmade way), neither was appreciated a wide and varied representation of cultural objects.
The gastronomic representation of the island as always at the height of the expected, where we had the pleasure to taste and enjoy a wide variety of typical dishes of the autochthonous gastronomy of the Bioko island.
Good musical ambience in which there was no lack of great established artists and also some promises of the musical panorama Bóobë, they tried to animate the event with the enjoyment of their performances.
In summary: This edition was perfectly up to expectations on the international day of the mother tongue (Éböbë 2017); complying with all the canons established by the organization of Éböbë, the safety of the participants was ensured at all times, additional accommodations were provided for children and everything went without notable incidents.
It also served to raise awareness among skeptics and demonstrate the firm commitment of the socio-cultural project of the Éböbë, towards a purely socio-cultural projection.
I believe that Basakato SF, should present its candidacy if the opportunity comes to host any of the next editions to come.
It can be seen that this edition of the Éböbë 2017 was a turning point between the past editions and those that have followed in the following years. ~ EULO S.B.

Tell us about your Bubi mother tongue day experience in Moka.
AN INTROSPECTIVE LOOK. Two details invaded my heart at the mother-tongue edition held in Moka that will live forever in my memory: the tribute to singer-songwriter Luis Sorizo and the nipa-making workshop, where the women of Moka became the main protagonists. I had a vague idea, from my childhood, of the traditional construction of houses with nipas. Reliving it touched me so much that it ignited something inside me from then on. My life changed completely, for the better. The struggle for the recovery of the values of our cultural identity became a commitment, along with my work and the care of my children. I became involved in the language project, and today this commitment is more deeply rooted in me than ever. I started to teach my children to speak the Moka variant, which is my mother's language. The organization of the following editions would no longer be alien to me. Not being able to be in all the activities already made me sad. Being in the fight for the survival of the Bubi language is the best thing that has happened to me in recent times. Respecting those who do not see this involvement necessary in their lives, I would like to encourage those who have not yet participated and have the desire to do so to do so, because this experience is unforgettable..... ~ WAÁTYÁLERO ERÍMOLA

Tell us how you lived it, was it exciting?
I am Löbërí (song), a native of Bososo: my karítyöbo is from there. I live in the city of Geneva (Switzerland) and when I heard that the language day was being celebrated in the village where I lived my best childhood memories, I didn't hesitate for a second to take the plane to support both the village and the Ëvóvë/Ëbóbë Association. During the cultural week, I attended the Böbé language classes for children and even animated a small song workshop for the little ones. One afternoon, with my mother, we put on a little play telling my story in Bososo: the story of the daughter of the village, born in Europe, who spoke Böbé with her friends when she came to Bososo as a child. That girl, now a woman, returns after almost 30 years and finds that the children of the village no longer speak her mother tongue. At the end of the story, mom and I sang with the people several songs of yesteryear. We concluded by encouraging everyone to always speak our language with their children. The language day festivities were one of the most impactful things I have ever experienced! A marvel! First, I think I loved it all because of the connection I have always had with the people, the language and the Bubi culture, but also because of the quality of the organization, the seriousness and involvement of the organizers and the very positive energy with which the public responded. What I also liked, was the intergenerational aspect of the festival: I saw both young children, as
well as older people and teenagers participating and that was very nice. Finally, I was pleased to see the collaboration between the different villages during the event and its preparation: whether in the dances, the food or even to decorate the space (I have funny memories of the men from Basakato-Rile'o who came to build a wetya). For me it was a unique opportunity to appreciate the richness of the diversity of our culture.~ LÖBËRÍ

INTERNATIONAL MOTHER TONGUE DAY
ËVÖÓVÈ BELEBÚ 2020
From February 16 to 23, 2020, were held in Belebú, the events to commemorate February 21, 'International Day of Mother Tongues', instituted by UNESCO and, has been celebrated around the world since 2000. The sociocultural Association ËVÓVË/ËBÓBË, organizes this ephemeris since 2014, designating a different locality of the island of Bioko each year, for its celebration; the first edition was held in Rebola; Belebú took over from Bososo.
The objective of this celebration is to raise awareness among the population about the disappearance of indigenous languages and the need to prevent this phenomenon, promoting actions aimed at the recovery of these languages, with more emphasis on the recovery of the Bubi language.
In the BELEBÚ 2020 edition, several awareness conferences, traditional dances, contests, text readings and narratives were organized, focusing on the Bubi language, especially the variant 'và ladyá', which is the one used in the villages located on the slopes of the Caldera de Lubá. Excursions to the forest were also organized, in order to contemplate live the production chain of palm wine, in its traditional elaboration, coming into contact with all the utensils and tools of the winemaker.
On the other hand, the organizers understood that it was not enough to sensitize the most vulnerable population about the meaning of the loss of their mother tongue as an identity value; it was also necessary to provide them with adequate spaces where they could feel comfortable and identified with the environment. Together and in solidarity, we built a permanent stage of 7m x 5m, which could be used to host the events of the moment and also serve for future concerts or cultural events. The road infrastructures that give access to the main square were reinforced and the surroundings were adapted so that the population could fully enjoy this environment. Today, it is the meeting point for young people on weekends and certainly contributes to the cultural consolidation of the Bubi culture.
The ËVÖÓVÈ BELEBÚ 2020 edition marked a turning point in the organization of Mother Language Day on the island of Bioko; it went from being a weekend of commemoration to become the organization of a cultural week around the language, rites, beliefs and other aspects of the Bubi culture. ~ ANSELMO EBIACA

BÁTÖIPÖKKÓ
Tell us about the Bubi mother tongue day in Bátöipökkó. How did you enjoy it?
What do we say? Lastly, when we were told that the people that the villages, to present themselves to be able to host the event. We were afraid. I was afraid to come forward. But then the board of the association encouraged me by telling me that we are stable.
We are consistent. We are punctual. We are always performing. And for me to have courage and present the candidacy for free as to celebrate the edition of the Mother Language Day. I presented the candidacy of the people. But with a little fear. Well, then the time came when we were able to present our candidate. We were voted in. Then came the issue of the pandemic and after the pandemic.
And we can start because in all the times of the pandemic we were doing the non face-to-face meetings. And before the pandemic curfew was removed. The association in control that Bátöipökkó had already organized, we all received that event with a lot of emotion, a lot of joy, because we never imagined that we could celebrate a mother tongue day, especially Bubi, in the village of Bátöipökkó.
That was a special year in Bátöipökkó because no event that has ever been celebrated in that community of Bátöipökkó had not hosted as many people as we saw on that day. It was a historic day that will never, ever, ever, ever, ever be forgotten in this town. What is already captured in the golden book of the Town Hall, where the honoree Remei Sipi signed in the golden book.
And in this great Besako bie Rihole alias Gere also signed. When we received this event it appeared as we have received a blessing, a special blessing from our Creator, we have felt proud of so much support that there was in that town in that year, the truth that my thanks to those thinking people who have been able to sit down and to plan this act that until today we are carrying out, which has started from a single village and almost most of the people and the villages of the island have been involved.
The importance for me to enjoy this event has been for me, the rescue of all that we had forgotten in our culture and what we did not know of its existence, it is an honor to know and know who we are, what are our roots and where we come from, especially to give value to what we are, now we have to maintain and sustain that privilege which we have and continue to enjoy through other editions.
It filled my heart with great joy to see all the people of the island gathered in a town as small as Bátöipökkó, Vencedor de Bueyes. ~ ITYÖKÓ

UNCTION OF THE SIÖBO SÁ RUPPE
The 3rd of January, from the Boobe cosmovision, the ceremonies of change of season are concluded. We have culminated the harvest period and soon with the fertility rites of Botoitoi day, we open the sowing period. Today's feast, which in Rebola begins with the ceremony and rituals of the Baeba (in the field), the Böoté of the Botuku and of the spirits; and today, on a general level, in Ëtúlá á Eri (Bioko Island), we can say that the celebrations begin with the proclamation and celebration of Rommo day in Moka and end in Rebola on the Day of Anointing of the Siöbo sá Böhulá wá Ruppe - ceremonial of the confirmation of the renewal of vital energies. We can call this time of ritual ceremonies as Rommo rá Böoté. This is the same
period of celebration with the European páganos, the festivities of Yule, which the Catholic Churches transformed into Christmas, and the time of Lent which coincides with Botoi. The Church imposed its rites for a common religious consciousness for the whole world. Equal time of celebration in some indigenous cultures of the Americas: we all celebrate the energy of the equinoxes and solstices. The world and man were created by endowing him with consciousness to the worship of the Supreme Energy, "O BOE", and in every culture, man has known how to express himself to honor God. We all celebrate the same God. There is no superior culture in the knowledge of God, but the manifestations of worship vary from one culture to another and from one place to another, in the same moments of peak of transforming energy. Unfortunately, in our case, despite being from the same town and raised in the same environment, many have forgotten the early mornings when our grandfathers and grandmothers took us to the Ruppe Shrine for the anointing of the Siöbo on these dates, and the popular meals we enjoyed. I pray that we return to our essence. Each people is unique in life and each culture is a harmonizing element for the well-being of the world. Let us take back our values in order to contribute with our culture to give life to nature. I wish you a happy day. Remember that - January 6 is the feast of the children of multiple births* - January 20 is the feast of BISILA - January 27 is the feast of Katto - the feast of cocoa and other cash crop products.
